Questions for Confluence vs AskSpace: an honest comparison
Questions for Confluence is Atlassian's own Q&A app for Confluence (Atlassian: Questions for Confluence on the Marketplace). AskSpace is a Q&A app per Confluence space, and I build it at Dortus. If Questions for Confluence works for your team, keep it. This page shows what the two apps share, where Questions for Confluence is ahead, where AskSpace may fit better, and how to move if you decide to.
Written on 14 October 2026, updated on 15 October 2026. Facts about Questions for Confluence come from Atlassian's pages, linked next to each point; where something comes from our own test, the page says so. Facts about AskSpace describe the version on the Atlassian Marketplace today. Atlassian changes its pages and menu names now and then, so if your site looks different, go by the linked Atlassian page.
What both apps do
Both apps have these, though the details differ:
- A place in the sidebar. Questions for Confluence is under Apps → Questions in the Confluence sidebar (Atlassian: Integrate questions with your spaces). AskSpace opens from the space sidebar.
- Permissions per space. In Questions for Confluence, access follows the space permissions, and per space you set View, Add and Delete for each group (Atlassian: Assign Questions for Confluence permissions). AskSpace has its own settings per space, split another way: it has no view setting (see When Questions for Confluence is the better fit), and it sets asking and answering separately (see When AskSpace may fit better).
- Votes and one best answer. People vote answers up or down. In Questions for Confluence they can also vote on questions (Atlassian: What are votes and experts?); in AskSpace only answers get votes. In Questions for Confluence the person who asked accepts an answer, or an admin does (Atlassian: Ask a question). In AskSpace the person who asked marks the best answer, or a moderator does: a space admin, or someone in a moderator group the space admin picks.
- Questions on a page. Questions for Confluence has the Questions List macro (Atlassian: Integrate questions with your spaces). AskSpace has the AskSpace questions block.
When Questions for Confluence is the better fit
On these points Questions for Confluence is ahead of AskSpace. If they matter to your team, stay with it.
- Made by Atlassian. It is Atlassian's own app, with documentation on Atlassian's support site (Atlassian: Use Questions for Confluence). It is rated about 3 out of 5 from 77 reviews on its Marketplace listing (October 2026; Atlassian: Questions for Confluence on the Marketplace).
- Who may see questions. Per space, you choose for each group whether it may view the questions (Atlassian: Assign Questions for Confluence permissions). AskSpace has no view setting: everyone who can open AskSpace in the space can read its questions and vote.
- Questions in Confluence search. Questions show up in Confluence's quick search and full search results (Atlassian: Ask a question, Questions for Confluence on the Marketplace). Atlassian's Ask a question page also mentions a search filter for questions. AskSpace questions don't show up there: AskSpace has its own search, one space at a time.
- Questions for the whole site. Besides questions in a space, there are global questions, asked to the whole site (Atlassian: Integrate questions with your spaces). In AskSpace every question belongs to one space.
- One list across spaces. The Questions List macro can show questions from one space or from every space the reader can view, filtered to recent, popular or unanswered questions (Atlassian: Integrate questions with your spaces). The AskSpace block shows up to 10 questions from the space of the page it is on: recent, unanswered or solved.
- Points and experts. Votes build a reputation, and a leaderboard shows the top experts (Atlassian: What are votes and experts?). AskSpace has no points.
- Told about new questions. People can watch a topic and get notified when a new question is added to it (Atlassian: Watch and edit topics). AskSpace sends no email, and nobody gets a notice when a new question is asked. Its notices show only inside AskSpace, for example when someone answers your question or marks your answer as best.
If your team asks questions across the whole site, or wants them to turn up next to pages in search, Questions for Confluence is the better fit. There is no reason to switch.
When AskSpace may fit better
Here AskSpace works differently, and that may suit your team better. Each AskSpace point describes the app as it runs today.
- Separate rules for asking and answering. In Questions for Confluence, asking and answering come together. Atlassian puts it in one sentence: "if you can view the space, you'll be able to ask and answer questions" (Atlassian: Ask a question). Its permissions page lists View, Add and Delete per group and names no separate permission for answering (Atlassian: Assign Questions for Confluence permissions). A request for finer permissions, "Granular permissions for questions", was closed in May 2025 for low engagement, with 35 votes (Atlassian: CONFCLOUD-48392). In AskSpace a space admin sets Who may ask questions? and Who may answer? separately: everyone in the space, space admins only, or chosen groups. With chosen groups, only members of those groups can ask or answer. That goes for space admins too: a space admin who is not in one of those groups can't ask or answer either. For example: everyone may ask, and only the support team answers. AskSpace isn't the only app that does this: according to their documentation, Smart Questions and Answers and Modern Questions for Confluence also set who may ask and who may answer separately.
- Off until a space admin turns it on. In Questions for Confluence, questions are on in every space and follow the space permissions; a space admin can take permissions away (Atlassian: Assign Questions for Confluence permissions). In AskSpace, Q&A is off in every space until a space admin turns it on in that space, so each team decides for its own space whether to use it. Until then, the AskSpace page in the space sidebar shows only that Q&A is off, plus a Turn on Q&A button for space admins. There is no site-wide switch, so on a site with many spaces each space admin does this for their own space.
- Search per space, answers included. AskSpace's search looks in the titles, details, tags and answers of the space's questions, and says Found in an answer when a search word is only found in an answer. Questions for Confluence has its own search too: you view and search a space's questions from Questions in the sidebar (Atlassian: Integrate questions with your spaces), and its listing says you can find questions and answers in Confluence search (Atlassian: Questions for Confluence on the Marketplace). So this is a different way to search, not a missing feature.
- Import with a preview and an undo. AskSpace imports from Questions for Confluence on the same site, from CSV, and from a Server or Data Center export file. You see a preview before anything is saved, and Undo this import removes the imported questions again. For Questions for Confluence in Cloud, an exporter and importer is an open feature request (Atlassian: CONFCLOUD-51723).
- Export to CSV. A space admin exports the space's questions and answers to one CSV file, and AskSpace can import that file again. Questions for Confluence has no export in Cloud: Atlassian says there is currently no way to export Questions data from Confluence Cloud (Atlassian: Migrate from Confluence Cloud to Data Center, Confluence Questions FAQ). To keep a copy anyway: on a Cloud site we tested, the questions and answers are Confluence content that Confluence's general REST API can read (Atlassian: Confluence REST API, content). Atlassian doesn't offer that as an export. How to export Questions for Confluence Cloud data shows how.
A limit to know. AskSpace holds up to 6,000 questions per space. When a space is full, nobody can ask a new question there.
AskSpace is listed on the Atlassian Marketplace.

How to move from Questions for Confluence
On the same Confluence Cloud site, AskSpace reads your questions directly, with your own account, through Confluence's general REST API. You don't need an export file, and you can start with one space. Atlassian doesn't describe this as a way to move Questions data, so check the counts in the preview. AskSpace tells you about questions it could not import, such as questions without a space, and about best answers it could not read.
- Start the import. You need to be a space admin. Go to Space settings → Integrations → AskSpace. Under Import & export, choose Import questions. When you can see questions in Questions for Confluence on your site, Questions for Confluence (this site) is one of the sources.
- What it reads. The questions, answers, topics and accepted answers, with their original dates. AskSpace reads them with your own account, so it only brings over what you can see in Confluence. Topics become tags, up to 3 per question, and AskSpace tells you how many topics did not fit.
- Preview first. Before anything is saved, you see how many questions were found in each space, and the first 5 questions. For each space you choose: import into the same space, into the space you started from or another space in the list, or skip it. You can only import into a space where you are a space admin.
- What doesn't come along. Votes, and anything that is not part of a question or an answer: AskSpace has no comments. Images, attachments, mentions of people and macros without their own text become [content omitted during import]; code blocks stay code blocks. A question that Confluence shows without a space can't be imported; the preview counts these.
- Limits. One import takes up to 5,000 questions. Of each question it takes the first 100 answers and leaves out the rest without a note. A space holds up to 6,000 questions in total; if an import doesn't fit, the preview says so, and AskSpace imports the newest questions that fit.
- Undo. Undo this import deletes the imported questions and all their answers, including answers people added after the import. You can't get them back.
- The originals stay. AskSpace only reads. Nothing changes in Questions for Confluence. The import is a copy, not a sync. If you run it again later, AskSpace skips the questions it already imported that are still in the space you import into, and adds the rest. So a question you deleted in AskSpace comes back. New answers and edits to questions you already imported don't come along.
- From Server or Data Center. Questions for Confluence on Server and Data Center has a REST API that can export questions; it needs version 2.3.0 or later (Atlassian: How to export Confluence Questions data). AskSpace reads the JSON file from
GET /rest/questions/1.0/question?limit=700on your Server or Data Center site: it takes the fields it knows and leaves the rest empty. If the file lists answers but leaves out their text, AskSpace tells you how to get them. To move to Questions for Confluence in Cloud instead, Atlassian's Confluence Cloud Migration Assistant can migrate your questions (Atlassian: Migrating Questions for Confluence App). What has to be in place, and what to do when questions are missing: Migrating Questions for Confluence to Cloud.

Short answers
Can I use both apps at the same time? Yes. AskSpace only reads from Questions for Confluence, and Q&A stays off in a space until a space admin turns it on. So you can try AskSpace in one space while the rest of the site keeps using Questions for Confluence. The two apps don't sync, so pick one place for new questions in each space.
Can everyone ask while only some people answer? Not in Questions for Confluence, going by Atlassian's documentation: "if you can view the space, you'll be able to ask and answer questions" (Atlassian: Ask a question). In AskSpace, yes: a space admin sets who may ask and who may answer separately. Some other Q&A apps for Confluence can do this too (see When AskSpace may fit better).
Do AskSpace questions show up in Confluence search? No. AskSpace has its own search per space. Questions for Confluence questions do show up in Confluence search (Atlassian: Ask a question).
Do votes come along when I import? No. Questions, answers, original dates, topics (as tags) and accepted answers do.
Can I get my questions out of AskSpace again? Yes. A space admin exports the space to CSV: one row per question or answer, with author, date, tags and best answer. Votes are not in the file, and authors are in it by name only. If you import the file again, each question and answer shows the author's name, but it is not linked to their Atlassian account.
Where are AskSpace questions stored? AskSpace runs on Atlassian Forge. Your questions are kept in the app's own storage, hosted by Atlassian, not on Dortus servers. They are not Confluence pages, so use the CSV export when you want your own copy.
Are there other ways to run Q&A in Confluence? Yes. Q&A in Confluence Cloud: your options lists them, How to build an FAQ in Confluence Cloud shows how to do it without an app, and Stack Internal vs Q&A inside Confluence helps if you are weighing a separate tool.
