Stop answering the same questions in Slack: keep them in Confluence

Where is the VPN guide? Who approves a laptop? How do I get access to the test site? Someone answers in Slack, the thread scrolls away, and next month the same question comes back. This guide shows how to give those answers one place in Confluence that people can find. First with what Confluence and Slack already offer, then with an app.

Written on 14 October 2026 from the Atlassian and Slack pages linked next to each step. Menu names change now and then. If your Slack or Confluence looks different, follow the linked page.

Some of the Community questions this guide answers: “Capturing knowledge sharing happening in Slack into Confluence pages”, “How can I add a slack message to confluence cloud blog space from slack channel” and “Confluence FAQ Slack Bot” (Atlassian Community).

Why answers get lost in Slack

  • Threads scroll away. An answer in a thread is easy to give and hard to find a month later, especially for someone who was not in the channel.
  • Search needs the right words. The person asking often uses different words than the person who answered. Where your Slack plan includes AI search, it can answer a question typed in plain words and links to the messages it used (Slack: Search with AI in Slack). It can only use messages that Slack still keeps and that you can see.
  • History can disappear. Without a paid Slack plan, a workspace can only see and search the last 90 days of messages, and messages older than a year are deleted (Slack: Usage limits, Customize data retention in Slack).

The fix is a habit more than a tool: answer once, write it down in one place, and from then on answer with a link. Agree who turns a repeated answer into a page and keeps it up to date.

Step 1: pick one place in Confluence for the answers

  • One page or one space. For a handful of questions, one FAQ page is enough. For more, use a space or a parent page with one page per answer. How to build an FAQ in Confluence Cloud compares the ways to set that up.
  • Start from a template. In a knowledge base space, use Create and pick a how-to or troubleshooting template (Atlassian: Knowledge base with Confluence). The troubleshooting template describes the problem, then the fix, and shows related articles by label (Atlassian: Troubleshooting article template).
  • Use the asker's words. Make the page title the question as people type it in Slack, for example How do I get access to the test site? Put other words people use, such as the old name of a tool, in the first lines.
  • Add labels. Labels are keywords you add to pages, so related answers can be found together (Atlassian: Use labels to organize content and attachments). The Filter by label macro lists the pages that share a label (Atlassian: Insert the filter by label macro).
  • Put a search box on the start page. The Live Search macro adds a search box to a page, and you can limit it to one space or to a label (Atlassian: Insert the Live Search macro).
  • Copy the link. In Confluence, the link icon next to Share copies the page's link. A link does not give access by itself, so check who can see the page (Atlassian: Share Confluence content). Slack guests and people from other companies in the channel often have no access to your Confluence site.
  • Or share it to Slack from Confluence. The Share window has a Share to Slack option: pick the workspace, then the channel or person, and add a message if you like. The Confluence Cloud app for Slack is a system app that comes installed on Confluence Cloud sites (Atlassian: Share Confluence content). A Confluence admin can turn the app off for the whole site, and a space admin can turn off its Slack notifications for one space (Atlassian: Use Slack and Confluence together). If you don't see Share to Slack, ask your Confluence admin.
  • Link previews. Once you connect your accounts (open a direct message with the Confluence Cloud app in Slack and run /confluence notify), the app shows a preview when someone posts a Confluence link. Restricted pages get no preview (Atlassian: Use Slack and Confluence together).
  • Not written down yet? Answer in Slack as usual, then copy the answer into the page and reply in the thread with the link. The next person gets the link right away.

Step 3: make the place easy to find from Slack

  • Pin it. Pin the message with the link. Pinned messages are in the Pins tab at the top of the channel, for everyone in it. A channel holds up to 100 pins (Slack: Pin messages).
  • Put it in a tab. Channels have tabs at the top. Add the link to a folder in a tab, or add a canvas tab with the most-asked links (Slack: Add and manage tabs in channels and direct messages).
  • Greet new members with it. Workflow Builder has a template, “New channel member welcome”, that sends everyone who joins the channel a welcome message and a form by direct message, and posts what they fill in to the channel (Slack: Build a workflow: Use a workflow template). Put the link in the welcome message. Workflow Builder needs a paid Slack plan (Slack: Guide to Slack Workflow Builder).

Step 4: tell the channel when an answer changes

With the Confluence Cloud app for Slack, a channel can follow a space or a page. In the channel, run /confluence connect with the URL of the space or page. Updates then show up in the channel. A subscription made from Slack sends notifications for all events by default, and /confluence list lets you edit it (Atlassian: Use Slack and Confluence together).

What Atlassian's Slack apps do and don't do

  • The Confluence Cloud app for Slack works mostly from Confluence to Slack: notifications, link previews and sharing to Slack. Once the @confluence bot is in the channel, a thumbs-up on a notification or preview likes the page in Confluence (Atlassian: Use Slack and Confluence together, Share Confluence content). Atlassian's documentation for this app does not describe saving a Slack message or thread as a Confluence page. A Community answer goes further and says it cannot create Confluence content from existing Slack messages (Atlassian Community: How can I add a slack message to confluence cloud blog space from slack channel).
  • Atlassian Rovo has its own Slack app. If your organisation uses Rovo, its Slack app brings Rovo's AI assistance into Slack, through direct messages and mentions. You can mention Rovo in a thread to get a summary, and paste that into your Confluence page. In channels, it works with the permissions of a bot account, so Atlassian advises giving that account access only to what anyone in the organisation may see (Atlassian: Using the Atlassian Rovo Slack app).
  • Rovo can also search Slack. An organisation admin can connect Slack to Rovo, so Rovo search finds the Slack messages each person is allowed to see (Atlassian: Connect Slack to Teamwork Graph). That helps find the old thread, but the answer still lives in Slack.
  • Other apps. Community answers point to Marketplace apps and custom builds on the Confluence REST API for turning Slack threads into pages (Atlassian Community: Create confluence article from slack post/thread, Can I push a Slack thread or question to Confluence Question?). This guide does not compare them.

Where AskSpace fits

Full disclosure: I build AskSpace at Dortus. It is a Q&A app per Confluence space. AskSpace has no Slack integration. It does not connect to Slack, posts nothing to Slack, and talks to nothing outside Atlassian. It is a place in Confluence for the questions, not a bot in your chat.

What it adds to the steps above:

  • People ask, colleagues answer. Anyone who may ask types the question in their own words. A space admin turns Q&A on in the spaces that need it and chooses who may ask and who may answer. Anyone who can open AskSpace in that space can vote answers up or down, even people who are not allowed to answer. Nobody can vote on their own answer. The person who asked, or a moderator, marks the best answer.
  • Earlier questions can show up while someone types. While someone types the title of a new question, AskSpace shows up to 3 similar questions from the same space. The list appears once the title has two words that name the topic, such as VPN guide. Short words and filler such as how, what or the do not count. It matches words, not meaning, and it only looks at AskSpace questions, not at your Confluence pages.
  • Search includes the answers. Search looks in the titles, details, tags and answers of the space's questions, and says Found in an answer when a search word is only found in an answer.
  • A link for Slack. Every question has Copy link in its menu. Paste that in Slack instead of retyping the answer. Only people who can open that space in Confluence can open the link, and AskSpace adds no preview in Slack.
  • On the team's start page. The AskSpace questions block lists questions on a page. You choose recent, unanswered or solved questions, how many (3, 5 or 10) and, if you like, one tag. It only shows questions from the space that page is in, so the start page has to be in the same space as the questions.

What it does not do:

  • Nobody is notified of a new question. AskSpace sends no email, nothing to Slack and nothing to Confluence's notifications. It keeps three kinds of notices: someone answered your question, someone marked your answer as best, or a moderator edited or deleted what you wrote. People see them in the For you tab the next time they open AskSpace in that space. So agree who checks new questions, and when. The Unanswered tab shows questions with no answers yet. A question that has answers but no best answer shows only under All.
  • No screenshots. Questions and answers hold text, links, bold, code and lists, but no images or attachments. Slack threads often have screenshots; those stay in Slack or go on a Confluence page.
  • Not in Confluence search. AskSpace questions are found with AskSpace's own search, one space at a time. Confluence search and the Live Search box from step 1 do not find them. If you use AskSpace next to FAQ pages, people have two places to look, so keep long-lived how-tos as pages and link to them from the answer.
  • No import from Slack. Copy old questions and answers into AskSpace by hand, or put them in a file in AskSpace's Simple CSV format, with one question and at most one answer per row, and let a space admin import it. Each answer in that file becomes the best answer, so check them before you import. The names in such a file are not linked to Confluence accounts.

AskSpace is listed on the Atlassian Marketplace. Getting started with AskSpace walks through the setup.

Which setup fits?

Your situationA setup that fits
A handful of questions keep coming backOne FAQ page, pinned in the channel
Dozens of how-tos for one teamA space or parent page with templates and labels, a Live Search box, and the link in a channel tab
New questions keep coming, and several people answerEach answer as a page in one space, and the channel follows that space with /confluence connect. Or a Q&A app in the team's space, linked from the channel, if you want votes and one best answer. Either way, agree who checks for new questions.
People want answers inside Slack itselfThe Atlassian Rovo app for Slack, if your organisation uses Rovo, or a separate Q&A tool with its own Slack integration; see when a separate Q&A tool fits better

Short answers

Can the Confluence Cloud app for Slack turn a Slack thread into a Confluence page? Atlassian's documentation for that app does not describe saving a thread as a page. The app sends Confluence activity to Slack, shows link previews and lets you share pages to Slack (Atlassian: Use Slack and Confluence together, Share Confluence content).

Can a Slack channel see when the FAQ page changes? Yes. Run /confluence connect with the page or space URL in the channel (Atlassian: Use Slack and Confluence together).

Does AskSpace work inside Slack? No. AskSpace has no Slack integration and talks to nothing outside Atlassian. You can paste a link to an AskSpace question in Slack.

How long does Slack keep messages? It depends on your Slack plan and its settings. On paid plans, Slack keeps messages for the lifetime of the workspace by default, unless an owner sets a shorter retention. Without a paid plan, a workspace sees the last 90 days, and messages older than a year are deleted (Slack: Usage limits, Customize data retention in Slack). Even when Slack keeps a thread, it is not one place that the team keeps up to date and links to.
