MailView vs MSG/EML Email Viewer for Jira
Two Marketplace apps show Outlook .msg and .eml attachments on the work item. We installed both on the same Jira Cloud site and opened the same emails in each. This is what we saw, including what the other app does better.
Disclosure first: Dortus makes MailView. We did this test ourselves, on 16 October 2026, with MSG/EML Email Viewer for Jira version 2.2.0 by CloudScript and the MailView build that became 1.5 (1.6 differences are marked). If CloudScript has changed since, or we got something wrong, email support@dortus.com and we will correct it.
How we tested
One Jira Cloud site, one work item with nine test emails attached: a normal supplier email with an inline logo, an invoice scam with a misleading link, a reported phishing email with a lookalike domain, a forwarded email without a file extension, a broken file, and a few plain ones. Both apps installed side by side, each opened on the same work item.
Side by side
| MailView (Dortus) | MSG/EML Email Viewer (CloudScript) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | A box in the right column of the work item (new work item view: in the Apps group) listing every email by subject and sender; one click opens the email in a large view. Optional wide panel. | An "Emails" tab under Activity, next to Comments and History. The first email is open, the others collapsed behind "Show email". |
| A normal email | Subject, from, to, cc, date, formatted text, inline images shown, attachments as tiles. Earlier replies folded away. | Formatted text; the inline logo showed as "[Inline image unavailable]". Earlier replies written out in full. |
| A suspicious email | Red "Likely phishing" bar with the reasons in plain words (lookalike domain, DMARC failed, two links that go somewhere else than they say), links defanged in the copy-out, tracking pixel blocked, Details tab with SPF, DKIM and DMARC and the address behind every link. | No verdict. The email is shown as is, with the phishing links clickable; remote images are blocked. |
| A forwarded email attached as text | 1.6: says "Original not checked" instead of judging the forwarding email. | Shown as a normal email. |
| Files inside the email | Tiles with download. | List with download, plus "Attach to work item" and "Attach all files": one click copies a file from the email onto the work item. MailView does not have this. |
| A broken file | 1.6: already in the list: "Can't be shown as an email, download the original". | In the list: "This email couldn't be displayed." |
| Permissions asked | One read scope (read:jira-work). Nothing stored, nothing sent outside Atlassian. | Ten read scopes and one write scope (needed for "Attach to work item"). |
| Jira Service Management | Works in the agent view. Not in the customer portal. | Not tested by us. |
What CloudScript does better
"Attach to work item" is useful: an agent gets an email with an invoice inside, and wants that invoice on the ticket as a normal attachment. In CloudScript that is one click. In MailView you download the file and upload it again. CloudScript also lives in the Activity tabs, which some teams will find more natural than a box in the right column.
What MailView does better
Reading: inline images show, earlier replies are folded, so a long thread reads like a mail client. Safety: a suspicious email gets a verdict with reasons, the Details tab shows what the receiving mail server recorded for SPF, DKIM and DMARC, and every link shows where it really goes. Trust: one read-only permission and nothing leaves your site; the email is parsed in your browser.
Which one fits
If your main job is pulling files out of emails onto tickets, CloudScript's attach button is a real time saver. If your desk reads forwarded customer emails, handles "is this mail legit?" tickets, or inherited a migration full of Outlook messages, MailView's reading and the phishing check matter more. Both have a free trial on the Marketplace, and installing both on a test site for an afternoon, as we did, answers the question for your own emails.
MailView by Dortus
Read .msg and .eml attachments on the work item
The email as it was sent, with inline images and the files inside, plus a phishing check in plain words. Runs on Atlassian, stores nothing, sends nothing anywhere.
